About Age in Place Picks: Who We Are and How We Choose
Most people start looking for a walker, a shower chair or a grab bar after something has already gone wrong: a fall, a hospital stay, a parent who is struggling at home. The shopping pages they land on are crowded with near-identical products, vague claims and paid placements.
Age in Place Picks exists to make that search calmer. We write plain-English buying guides that explain what to look for, compare real models side by side, and say clearly where a product is a poor fit.
Who we write for
- Adult children and caregivers helping a parent stay safe at home.
- Older adults choosing equipment for themselves.
- Families planning ahead, before a crisis forces a rushed decision.

How we choose what to recommend
- Start with the need, not the product. Every guide begins with what the person is trying to do and what could go wrong, such as weight limits, handle height, grip strength or space.
- Compare the facts that matter. We read manufacturer specifications from product listings, then check them against the product listing and the manufacturer's own claims.
- Show our working. Where a number comes from a listing, we say so. Where the listing does not state something, we write "not stated" instead of guessing.
- Say who a product is not for. Every top pick includes reasons to skip it.
We do not claim to have tested products ourselves. Our guides are built from published specifications, and we label them that way. Read the full rules in our editorial policy.
How we make money
Some links on this site are Amazon affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes the price you pay, and it does not decide what we recommend. We explain this in full on our affiliate disclosure page.
Who writes the guides
Our guides are published under the byline of Emily Carter, the editorial persona for Age in Place Picks, a senior-living and aging-in-place writer. The portrait shown with her name is an illustration. You can read about her focus and the standards behind each guide on her author page.
What we are not
We are not a medical provider, and nothing on this site is medical advice. A doctor, occupational therapist or physical therapist should guide any decision about a mobility aid, especially after a fall, surgery or a change in health.
Corrections and feedback
