The best night lights for seniors are the ones that come on by themselves, give soft light without glare and stay out of the way. Our first three picks are the AUVON motion-sensor night light for trips to the bathroom, the GE dusk-to-dawn night light in warm white for hallways, and the MCGOR under-cabinet lights for stairs and cabinets.
The page also covers two more lights, a comparison table, what to check when buying, and common questions. We have not tested these lights ourselves. Figures come from product listings.
A safety point first. A night light helps someone see the route, but it does not prevent falls on its own. If your parent has already fallen, or feels unsteady at night, ask their doctor or physical therapist to review balance and the home before relying on lighting alone. For a fall with injury, a head strike or inability to get up, seek urgent care or call emergency services.

1. AUVON Motion-Sensor Night Light: best motion-sensor plug-in
This set has two modes. In auto mode, the motion sensor lights the night light when movement is detected in the dark, then turns it off after 60 seconds with no motion. In night mode, only the light sensor works, so the light is on in the dark and off in daylight. The listing says the light dims in five steps and keeps its last brightness while plugged in.
What we like
- Motion mode and night mode in one unit.
- Four lights in the pack.
- Dimmable, with the brightness kept while plugged in, per the listing.
Keep in mind
- The listing gives the motion sensing area as 3 to 5 m at 120 degrees, so check that it covers the route.
- These are plug-in units, so an outlet has to be close to the route.
Right for you if
- Your parent gets up at night and walks to the bathroom.
- You want a light that turns on by itself and off when no one is moving.
- You want several lights for a hallway and bedroom in one pack.
Maybe skip it if
- The nearest outlet is far from the route.
- You need a light that stays fully on while someone sits still.
How it compares. The GE dusk-to-dawn night light has no motion sensor, so it suits a light that is simply on in the dark.
2. GE Dusk-to-Dawn Night Light: best warm-white dusk-to-dawn
This GE night light does one job: it turns on when the room gets dark and off when it brightens. The listing describes its 3000K warm white as soft, guiding light. The compact housing can cover an outlet or leave one receptacle free.
The listing says it is UL safety certified and carries a limited lifetime warranty, which is the manufacturer's claim.
What we like
- Warm white light that the listing describes as soft and guiding.
- Automatic on and off at dusk and dawn, with nothing to press.
- A low profile that leaves a second outlet free.
Keep in mind
- It has no motion sensor, so it stays on all night in the dark, even when no one is up.
- The listing text we reviewed does not state its wattage.
How it compares. The AUVON adds a motion mode this GE lacks, so choose the GE for a plain light that follows the room's brightness.
3. MCGOR Under-Cabinet Lights: best for stairs and cabinets
These are small rechargeable lights that mount under a cabinet or on a shelf edge with magnets or adhesive plates. The listing says the motion sensor turns them on in low light within 120 degrees and up to 10 ft, then off after about 20 seconds with no motion. That suits a stair or cabinet where someone needs to see the next step without finding a switch.
The listing says it is ranked #1 in Under-Counter Light Fixtures when we checked in November 2026.
What we like
- Motion sensing with no wiring or outlet needed.
- Five brightness levels and an always-on mode, per the listing.
- Magnetic mounting makes the lights easy to take off and charge.
Keep in mind
- The USB wall adapter is not included, according to the listing.
- At 7000K the light is cool white, a cooler tone than the warm picks.
How it compares. The AUVON plugs into an outlet and needs no charging, so it suits a hallway, while these suit a stair or cabinet.
4. Uigos LED Night Light: best simple LED
This is the simplest light here: a plug-in that switches on at dusk and off at dawn, with no buttons. The listing says it draws 0.5 W, the lowest stated figure on this page, and suggests hallways, bathrooms and bedrooms. The six-pack covers several outlets.
What we like
- Automatic dusk-to-dawn sensing with no buttons.
- The lowest stated power draw on this page.
- Six lights in the pack.
Keep in mind
- The light is daylight white, which is cooler than the warm picks.
- The listing text we reviewed does not state a brightness figure.
How it compares. Like the GE, it has no motion sensor, but it is cooler in tone, so the GE suits a warmer look.
5. GE Vintage Night Light: best warm glow
This one is decorative as well as functional. Edison-style bulbs sit inside a metal cage, and the listing gives a 2200K color, the warmest on this page.
It ranked #218 in Night-Lights when we checked in November 2026.
What we like
- The warmest color on this page at 2200K.
- A classic industrial look, per the listing, for bedrooms, hallways and bathrooms.
Keep in mind
- The listing gives no lumen or wattage figure, so light output is not stated.
- The listing describes a cozy ambient glow, not task lighting.
How it compares. The GE 3000K is a plainer light at a higher color temperature, so choose that if the look matters less.
What to look for in a night light
Light the route to the bathroom
Night-time trips often happen when a person gets up half-awake and cannot see the floor, a rug or a step. A light that comes on at the start of the route lets them see the way before they move. If your parent uses a rollator, keep the light path clear of it too.
Color temperature
Listings give color in Kelvin (K), and a lower number is warmer. The GE 3000K and GE Vintage 2200K are warm, and the MCGOR at 7000K is cool white. The AUVON listing says its warm white avoids harsh overhead light.
Plug-in or rechargeable
Plug-in lights need an outlet near the spot. Rechargeable lights, like the MCGOR, need a charger and a regular battery check. Place a night light low, so it lights the floor rather than shining into the eyes. For the rest of the home, our aging-in-place checklist is a useful next step, and our shower chairs guide covers bathroom safety. We explain how we source figures in our editorial policy.
Frequently asked questions
Should a night light stay on all night?
Dusk-to-dawn lights stay on in the dark. Motion lights turn off after a short time with no movement, about 60 seconds on the AUVON and about 20 seconds on the MCGOR.
Can a night light prevent falls?
A light can make the route easier to see, but it does not prevent falls by itself. A doctor or physical therapist can review the risks and the home with you.
Do I need batteries?
Not for the plug-in lights. The MCGOR has a built-in rechargeable battery, and its listing says the USB wall adapter is not included.
